Ryan Garcia is done waiting on Floyd Mayweather. The WBC welterweight champion posted a public ultimatum on X on Friday, telling Mayweather he will fight on Feb. 6 with or without him and that their proposed title fight is off the table unless a deal gets done.
ATTENTION RED 🚨
FLOYD MAYWEATHER
You called me and wanted this fight and I agree this is a big fight. But I am fighting FEB6th regardless so unless you actually make this happen then this fight is gone
You can go fight whoever but this is for a championship. I will TAKE you 0 with pleasure
Final warning no more games let’s make it happen.
The date is the tell. Feb. 6 is the same night The Ring’s Mike Coppinger has reported as the target for Garcia’s welterweight unification with Teofimo Lopez, with New York or Las Vegas in the running. Coppinger wrote that a Mayweather fight, “in the unlikely event it happens, would take place after Teo.”
Garcia’s post lines up with that timeline. It gives Mayweather one last chance to jump the line, and makes clear the champion won’t sit out the first quarter of 2027 waiting for him.
How Garcia and Mayweather got here
The talk started on Oct. 7, when FightHype reported that the two camps had been in contact. Garcia answered the same day with his terms: “And no I wouldn’t do an exhibition I want his 0 on the f***ing line.” He added, “I’m ready Floyd, remember you made this call,” the same claim he repeated on Friday.
On Oct. 21, Garcia went further, posting a screenshot of a FaceTime call with Mayweather and writing, “Trust me at first I thought this was bull*** But it’s real Floyd and I agree to a fight 147 for the WBC welterweight championship of the world 50-0 vs The current champ.”
The paper trail hasn’t caught up. Uncrowned’s Darshan Desai reported that a source told him “no serious negotiations for Garcia vs Mayweather have taken place.” Two days after the FaceTime post, Garcia’s attorney and adviser Guadalupe Valencia told Coppinger the fight was on hold for scheduling reasons.
When Floyd is free from other obligations, we will certainly work to make this fight happen; hopefully real soon.
Mayweather has not publicly confirmed any agreement. That hasn’t stopped others from weighing in, with Eddie Hearn picking Mayweather to win a pro fight and Bob Arum questioning how much interest the matchup would draw.
What’s riding on Feb. 6
Garcia (26-2, 21 KOs) took the WBC belt from Mario Barrios in February and stopped Conor Benn in the second round on Sept. 12 in his first defense. He has insisted any Mayweather fight be a sanctioned professional bout with that title at stake.
Mayweather, 50-0 with 27 knockouts, hasn’t fought professionally since stopping Conor McGregor in August 2017 and has competed only in exhibitions since. A planned professional return against Manny Pacquiao earlier this year never happened amid legal issues. He turns 50 in February.
The Lopez route has its own complication. The WBA ordered Lopez to face mandatory challenger Jack Catterall, with a negotiation window that closed on Oct. 22. Hearn, who promotes Catterall, has said his fighter could be elevated to full WBA champion if Lopez vacates to fight Garcia. Nothing has been signed for Feb. 6, and Mayweather had not responded publicly to Garcia’s latest post at the time of writing.
