Tony Bellew Names British Boxing's Biggest Underachiever

Tony Bellew says his former GB teammate Frankie Gavin is the biggest underachiever in British boxing after a brilliant amateur career that never carried over.

Tony Bellew knows exactly who he’d call British boxing’s biggest underachiever.

Speaking with Fight Your Corner, Bellew named his former GB teammate Frankie Gavin.

I always think of Frankie. When we were all starting, wow, he had such a start. He looked amazing, but the pro game is just a different beast.

He’s the biggest underachiever in British boxing.

Gavin was one of the best amateurs Britain has produced. In 2007, he became the first Englishman to win a world amateur title, and he also won Commonwealth Games gold. He was tipped for Olympic success in 2008, but he missed weight and never competed in Beijing.

As a pro, Gavin won the British welterweight title, but his only world title shot ended in a sixth-round stoppage loss to IBF champion Kell Brook in 2015.

Bellew took the opposite path. He came up short against Adonis Stevenson at light heavyweight, then moved up and won the WBC cruiserweight title with a third-round knockout of Ilunga Makabu in 2016.
