Kenzie Morrison, the son of former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison, is facing the biggest fight of his life after the full extent of his cancer diagnosis was revealed.
The 36-year-old boxer is battling Stage 4 cancer, with those closest to him urgently trying to raise enough money to get him to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for specialist treatment.
Morrison had revealed last week that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer after dealing with stomach and back problems for around a month. He underwent a CAT scan before being sent to Tulsa for further CT and MRI scans as doctors continued evaluating his condition.
The seriousness of the situation has since become clearer, with longtime boxing promoter Tony Holden confirming that Morrison’s cancer is Stage 4.
Urgent Effort To Get Kenzie Morrison Specialist Care
Holden, who had a close relationship with Tommy Morrison and remained connected to his sons following the former WBO heavyweight champion’s passing in 2013, described Kenzie’s diagnosis as completely unexpected.
Four days ago, completely unexpectedly, Kenzie was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.
Holden stated that the situation has become urgent, with the immediate goal being to get Morrison to Houston as quickly as possible. According to Holden, finances are currently the biggest obstacle preventing that from happening.
We are now in an urgent situation. We need to get Kenzie to MD Anderson in Houston as quickly as possible. Right now, the only thing standing in the way is money.
Morrison has launched a GoFundMe to help cover his medical expenses and the additional costs associated with seeking specialist treatment.
Family friend Tonya Wright has also appealed to local businesses for assistance, explaining that the financial burden extends well beyond hospital bills. Travel, accommodation, meals, gas and time away from work could add tens of thousands of dollars to the family’s expenses.
Those supporting Morrison are also putting together a benefit raffle, with businesses being asked to contribute products, services, gift certificates or experiences that could help generate additional funds.
The diagnosis has also brought support from Kenzie’s brother, Trey Lippe Morrison.
