Terence Crawford asked Jaron “Boots” Ennis on Wednesday night whether he would fight him if he came out of retirement. Ennis said yes right away, and Crawford laughed the whole thing off less than an hour later.
“I wanna see something! Yall wanna see me come back and fight so bad don’t yall? @JaronEnnis would you fight me next if I come outta retirement?” Crawford wrote on X. The post had drawn more than 2.4 million views by Thursday morning.
Ennis answered with “1000%!” Crawford followed up with three laughing emojis and a very different tone: “what I said I just wanted to see something! We all know what’s happening here.”
The exchange came days after the two went at each other during last Friday’s broadcast of Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Damian Knyba. Crawford said he would “step” on Ennis and argued the unbeaten 154-pounder still needs wins over names like Vergil Ortiz Jr. or Sebastian Fundora before he gets full credit.
Ennis holds the WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles after stopping Xander Zayas. Eddie Hearn has put a unification with IBF champion Josh Kelly at 80 percent likely for November or December, and he has also said an Ennis fight is the one that could pull Crawford out of retirement.
The Post That Came Before The Callout
The Ennis post wasn’t the only shot Crawford fired Wednesday. In a separate post before the callout, he wrote: “It’s funny how a fighter has a fight this weekend and every interview he has my name comes up like I have a fight this weekend. feels good to be a nobody.”
Crawford didn’t name the fighter. Ryan Garcia defends his WBC welterweight title against Conor Benn on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and Crawford has openly backed Benn, picking him to win and visiting his gym during camp. Garcia has called Crawford a “hater” over it and dismissed the idea that Crawford’s help will make a difference.
Crawford retired in December 2025 at 42-0 after beating Canelo Alvarez to become undisputed at super middleweight, and his trainer has shut down the comeback talk. Not everyone is buying it. Dan Rafael weighed in on X after the exchange, writing that “no way does Bud stay retired.”
Crawford is expected to be in Las Vegas for Garcia vs. Benn on Saturday.
