Gervonta Davis hasn’t fought since a controversial draw with Lamont Roach Jr. in March 2025, with outside-the-ring legal issues forcing him to pause his career since. Now, as he prepares to return in the new year, he’s already being lined up for what could be one of 2027’s biggest fights.
Davis has been stripped of his WBA lightweight title and designated “champion-in-recess,” meaning he’ll get a shot at the winner of Floyd Schofield-Lucas Bahdi’s vacant title fight and could reclaim a world championship in his first bout back.
Without a belt currently in hand, though, speculation has grown about whether Davis instead moves up to super-lightweight or even welterweight to chase bigger names.
One of those names is Ryan Garcia. Speaking on a Kick livestream, the WBC welterweight champion was asked whether he’d rather run back his loss to Davis or face fellow 147-pound titleholder Devin Haney.
Garcia said he’d genuinely want both fights, but ultimately leaned toward the Davis rematch, reasoning that since Haney has already taken a bad loss recently, avenging his own 2023 knockout defeat to Davis made more sense as the priority.
Which would I prefer Haney rematch or Tank rematch? S**t, both of ‘em. They equally need to get that work, equally bad though.
“I mean, Haney already got his a** real cooked, so you would have to go with Tank if you made a real decision, so probably the Tank rematch.
The catch is the weight: Garcia has insisted any rematch would need to happen at welterweight, while Davis has previously said 140 pounds is the highest he’s willing to go to face Garcia. Despite that gap, Garcia has recently indicated there’s already been contact between the two camps to discuss the fight.
