Floyd Mayweather knows better than almost anyone what dominance at the top of boxing looks like, and he’s putting his stamp of approval on the man he sees carrying that torch now.
Mayweather retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record and five division world titles to his name, following signature wins over Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, and Oscar De La Hoya.
Since then, plenty of fighters have tried to fill that void. However, Shakur Stevenson looks like one of the closest to actually doing it at just 29 years old. He’s already become a four-division world champion, having won titles from featherweight up through light welterweight.
In a recent training clip circulating on social media, Mayweather is seen describing Stevenson’s skill set as that of a “magician,” a level of praise that carries extra weight coming from a fellow elite counter-punching technician.
Stevenson’s most recent showcase backs up the compliment: he turned in a dominant performance to beat Teofimo Lopez and capture the WBO light welterweight title in his very first fight at 140 pounds. Since that win, he’s signed with Zuffa Boxing and has already been linked to several potential opponents for his next outing.
With Mayweather’s endorsement now added to his résumé, Stevenson’s case as boxing’s next true pound-for-pound star keeps getting stronger.
