James Toney does not think Terence Crawford would have thrived in the 1990s.
Toney told About Boxing that he enjoys watching the current generation without rating them against his own.
No fighter from this era could fight in my era, but I love some of these fighters. I love watching Crawford, David Benavidez, I love watching them fight but you know what? I am being real with you.
Toney won world titles at middleweight, super-middleweight and cruiserweight across a 92-fight career, beating Mike McCallum, Iran Barkley and Michael Nunn along the way. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022.
Crawford retired in December with a 42-0 record after beating Canelo Alvarez, having gone undisputed at super-lightweight, welterweight and super-middleweight. He is the only man to do that in three divisions in the four-belt era, and his win over Errol Spence Jr. in 2023 was a stoppage in nine.
Benavidez is due back on December 12 against WBC interim cruiserweight champion Michal Cieslak.
Toney has been busy giving opinions. He was at Ryan Garcia’s camp this month and predicted Garcia would stop Conor Benn inside five rounds on September 12.
