Robert Garcia turned down a Netflix documentary about Anthony Joshua rather than say what he actually thinks.
Garcia, who trains Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez and Vergil Ortiz Jr, joined Joshua’s corner alongside head coach Angel Fernandez for the 2022 Usyk rematch. Joshua lost a split decision but boxed to a clearer plan. He later parted with both men.
Speaking to ProBox TV, Garcia said Netflix wanted him in London for the film.
[Netflix are] doing a documentary on [Joshua], and they wanted to fly me to London to talk about the months I spent with him. I denied it, because I don’t want to be part of this. I’m not going to lie to nobody. I’d rather stay quiet.
His hesitation is about what comes next. Joshua was dropped twice inside the opening round by Kristian Prenga last Saturday in Saudi Arabia before knocking him out in the second.
Sometimes it might be a bad thing for promoters, fans and all of us wishing him to go through that round so he could get the win, because whenever he steps into another fight, it could be dangerous.
He was careful to frame it as concern rather than criticism.
Honestly, we were cheering for him to win because we want to see him against Fury. I still want to see it, it’s a competitive fight.
I’m going to be cheering for AJ, but it could be dangerous … We’re cheering for this guy to get up, get up. It could be dangerous what comes after that … I would love to see him win. He’s a great person.
Joshua is 36. Prenga arrived with 20 wins, all inside the distance. Tyson Fury stopped 46-year-old Mariusz Wach in seven rounds in Thailand the night before Joshua fought, and contracts for Joshua vs. Fury are signed for November with no venue announced.
