Puerto Rican Legend Wilfredo Gomez Dies at 69

Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gomez died Saturday night at age 69, his son confirmed to Puerto Rican media.

Gomez had been hospitalized for two weeks with respiratory complications. Multiple outlets including El Nuevo Dia and El Vocero reported the death occurred around 9 p.m. local time. Gomez compiled a 44-3-1 record with 42 knockouts, held world titles in three divisions, and made 17 consecutive super bantamweight defenses all by stoppage.

Tributes came from WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman and former WBO president Paco Valcarcel. Gomez was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1995.
