Tyson Fury watched Anthony Joshua nearly blow the whole thing, and his reaction was about what you’d expect.
Joshua was meant to cruise through Kristian Prenga in Jeddah on Saturday, a warm-up en route to the long-awaited showdown with Fury later this year. Fury had done his part 24 hours earlier, grinding out a seventh-round retirement win over Mariusz Wach in Thailand. Then Prenga nearly wrecked everyone’s plans.
The Albanian dropped Joshua twice in the opening round before “AJ” gathered himself and scored a second-round knockout to avert a massive upset. When Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh posted highlights on Instagram, Fury couldn’t help but weigh in.
Wow, wtf 🤬
More detailed comments are expected in the coming days, and it’s a safe bet Fury doubles down on his long-running claim that Joshua doesn’t have a reliable chin. Despite the scare, both British heavyweights will now turn their full attention to one another, with the fight expected to land in November.
There’s no guarantee for UK fans that it happens on home soil, either. Madison Square Garden in New York is believed to be the current frontrunner to host the clash between the two former world champions.
The wobble also gave the skeptics fresh ammunition. At least one prominent trainer has already declared Joshua “shot to bits” after the Prenga performance, a verdict that will only add intrigue to the biggest all-British fight in years.
