Terence Crawford has watched Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia fight since they were amateurs. He thinks the wrong man won.
Speaking on the Ring Champs YouTube channel, the former undisputed welterweight champion was asked how a rematch between the two would go now that both hold world titles at 147 pounds.
Ryan Garcia is cool but he ain’t smart enough to beat elite fighters. It’s just that he and Devin fought each other so many times in the amateurs, they just know each other.
His reading of April 2024 puts the result down to preparation rather than ability.
I think that all of the antics before the fight distracted Devin and caught him off guard, he took Ryan lightly.
I do think it would be different if they fought again because, if you watch the fight, he was just getting hit with the same punch over and over and over.
The history is messy. Garcia came in three pounds over the 140-pound limit and forfeited any claim to Haney’s WBC super-lightweight title, then dropped Haney three times and won a majority decision. He later tested positive for ostarine and the result was overturned to a no contest.
Both men have moved up since. Haney holds the WBO welterweight title. Garcia took the WBC version earlier this year.
A rematch is not close. Garcia defends against Conor Benn on September 12. Haney has not confirmed an opponent for his first fight of 2026 after Keyshawn Davis withdrew from an ordered mandatory. Talks over a catchweight bout between Haney and Shakur Stevenson stalled again this week.
