Shawn Porter says Terence Crawford is not coming back, and that the retirement was planned long before the Canelo Alvarez fight.
Footage of Crawford training has been circulating and has prompted speculation about a return. Porter, who lost to him in what turned out to be his own final fight, was asked about it by About Boxing.
Without saying too much, I will say that I don’t think he is going to come back. I don’t want to say that I know he is not going to come back because I feel like that is saying too much, but we have had our conversations a long time before he even fought Canelo Alvarez.
We have had conversations over the years and I knew that time was coming after that Canelo fight. What else do you want to do?
Crawford stopped Porter in the tenth round in November 2021 to retain the WBO welterweight title. Porter never fought again. Crawford went on to beat David Avanesyan and Errol Spence Jr. to go undisputed at 147, took a super-welterweight title from Israil Madrimov, then beat Canelo for the undisputed super-middleweight championship last September. He retired three months later at 42-0.
His trainer has already said the same thing. Brian McIntyre told BoxingScene this month that Crawford is done and does not need to come back, and that his gym time is spent helping other fighters.
One of them is Lester Martinez, who defends the WBC interim super-middleweight title against Luka Plantic on Saturday.
