Oscar De La Hoya says he is now actively working on Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn after previously maintaining he had not been approached about the fight, reversing course in a post on Instagram that suggested the September date discussed by Garcia could still happen.
De La Hoya, who promotes Garcia through Golden Boy Promotions, posted on Instagram.
We are working on Ryan Garcia vs. Benn. I just got the memo today, that is the fight that everybody wants to see, so I am going to make it happen for you guys.
The fight had been targeted for September 12 in Las Vegas as a WBC welterweight mandatory defense, but uncertainty around promoter involvement had clouded the timeline. De La Hoya’s statement suggests Golden Boy is now part of the process, potentially alongside Zuffa Boxing, which had previously been linked to staging the event.
Conor Benn earned his mandatory position with wins over Chris Eubank Jr. and Regis Prograis. Garcia won the WBC welterweight title in February by stopping Mario Barrios. Terence Crawford recently picked Benn to pull off the upset.
