Gervonta Davis is reportedly making one of the biggest changes of his professional career, with Jose Benavidez Sr. expected to serve as his trainer for his comeback fight this fall, according to a report from Abraham Gonzalez.
Sources told Gonzalez that the two sides spent several weeks working together before deciding the partnership was the right fit. Neither Davis nor Benavidez Sr. had publicly confirmed the arrangement at the time of reporting.
Benavidez Sr. is best known for training his sons — former two-division world champion Jose Benavidez Jr. and current cruiserweight champion David Benavidez. The reported move marks a significant departure for Davis, who has worked with a familiar group of trainers throughout his rise to becoming one of boxing’s biggest draws.
Davis has not fought since his controversial majority draw with Lamont Roach in March 2025. No opponent has been officially announced for his return, though speculation has continued around a potential fight with Devin Haney following recent social media exchanges between the two. Davis is 30-0-1 with 28 knockouts.
