Hasim Rahman’s comeback is off before it started.
Dan Rafael reported that the former heavyweight champion’s return, a six-rounder scheduled for August 18 in Rochester, New York, has been cancelled, along with the rest of the card.
Absolutely ZERO surprise but, per source, former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman’s return from retirement for a 6-rounder on Aug. 18 in Rochester, N.Y., has been canceled as has the entire card.
Rahman is 53 and has not fought in more than twelve years. He was due to face Robert Simms, himself 42.
The stated ambition was George Foreman’s record. Foreman was 45 when he knocked out Michael Moorer in the tenth round in 1994 to take the IBF and WBA titles, becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in history and doing it more than seven years after ending a decade away from the sport. Nobody has come close since.
Rahman has his own claim on the improbable. He knocked out Lennox Lewis in the fifth round in South Africa in 2001 in one of the biggest upsets the division has produced, lost the immediate rematch in four, then later reclaimed the WBC title and defended it in a 2006 draw with James Toney.
No new date has been reported.
