Edgar Berlanga went twelve rounds with Canelo Alvarez and lost every one of them. He does not think Christian Mbilli will get that far.
Berlanga gave his read on Canelo’s return to Ring Magazine, and it was not flattering to the champion.
I truly believe that Canelo could stop him.
I think that Mbilli is nothing special. To me, he’s a guy that comes forward, has good conditioning and throws a lot of punches.
His case rests on one night in particular.
But when it comes to IQ, I seen him fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, who literally had one hand and almost stopped him. He had one arm. He had torn his biceps in the fight. So, that just goes to show where he’s at as a fighter.
He does expect a good fight, and picked Canelo to win it.
A stoppage would be a departure. Canelo has not stopped anyone in almost five years, having gone to the cards in every defence between the Bivol loss in 2022 and the Terence Crawford defeat last September, which cost him the undisputed super-middleweight championship and remains his only loss at 168 pounds.
He has been out since with an elbow injury. Mbilli was elevated to full WBC champion when Crawford retired.
Berlanga has been rebuilding since the Canelo fight, most recently stopping Steven Butler, and wants back into the title picture at super-middleweight himself.
Canelo and Mbilli meet on Saturday, October 31 in Riyadh, topping a Mexico vs. The World card that is understood to carry a second world title fight.
